Habitat for Humanity

Our lives have changed since becoming a Habitat homeowner.
Gerri Norman lost her husband to cancer on Mother’s Day in 2003, the same day her son shipped out for Army boot camp. Her life changed drastically. The good news is that nearly four years later, she was selected for the Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads Inc. homeownership program. Gerri came to Habitat as a single parent struggling to stretch her paychecks to pay the rent and still have enough money left over for food. She was adapting to being a single adult with custody of her great niece, Angel, and great nephew, Michael.

Flash forward, one year later. Certain aspects of the Norman family’s lives have changed for the better – “to God be the glory” says Gerri. They are all earning good grades – Honor Roll (Michael), Principals’ List (Angel) and Dean’s List (Gerri). Gerri is pursuing her dream of higher education at Tidewater Community College by majoring in Business Management. Gerri’s outgoing personality has been a great fit in her new neighborhood.
She is immersed in the Huntersville community as the Civic League President. She ‘sincerely claims ownership,’ and her son, Norris L. Williams Jr. has completed three tours in Iraq.

“The stability and peace that Habitat SHR has made possible is priceless,” Gerri said. “Our futures are bright. We encourage each other to make better grades. I thank God for allowing me the opportunity to lead by example. My kids see me, and they are inspired and challenged to excel.”

In addition to receiving donations though the Combined Federal Campaign, Habitat for Humanity also operates two Habitat General Stores in Virginia Beach (474-0069) and Norfolk (616-0597), which accept donations. Both stores are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon - 5 p.m.
